Gear Advances in the Northern Shrimp Fishery

     With the decreased market demand of New England’s Northern Shrimp, fishermen must land the best quality, lowest count shrimp to be competitive and to justify the expense of participating in the fishery. Collaborative research between industry and fisheries scientists has resulted in several gear modifications that target larger shrimp, minimize bycatch and maintain commercial landings. Examples of gear were available for hands-on inspection, industry and research partners were also be available to answer questions and provide brief presentations of their research efforts.
