Monitoring Juvenile Lobster Abundance
Are Ventless Traps a Good Tool?
 

    
      This seminar brought together representatives from a variety of ongoing projects which were using ventless traps as a tool to monitor juvenile lobster abundance. This seminar provided an overview of each project and explored the relationship of these projects to one another and looked at the pros and cons of the various approaches. Included in this seminar was the Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation’s Ventless Trap Survey and its sister project the Fishermen and Scientists Research Society’s Lobster Recruitment project which relied on volunteer lobstermen to collect data. In contrast, the Regional Ventless Trap Surveys conducted this past summer through individual states with funding from ASMFC and the Mass Bay Ventless Trap Surveys were looked at as examples of highly controlled surveys which provided compensation to fishermen who participate.
