The Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation (GOMLF)
received funding from Congress to conduct the Bottom Line Project. This is a
voluntary program to provide economic assistance to lobstermen who elect to
exchange their poly Groundlines or tail warps for sinking line, in
anticipation of NMFS banning the use of floating line in many areas of
Maine. This session provided an overview of the program’s efforts so far,
including the results of the Bottom Line Survey which was mailed to all
Maine lobster license holders, the plan for collecting ploy rope, an update
on how the rope will be recycled, and of course an update on the status of
the Final Whale Rule.
