Area management could be a source of hope
for fishermen- something that might be a key to rebuilding diversity into
our fisheries and businesses. Area management builds on fishermen’s
understanding of the way a piece of bottom works, and the interrelationship
among fisheries. It includes local control and local responsibility,
stewardship, good conversation rules that are based on the ecology of an
area and give access for fishermen who live there. A coalition has formed
around area management for Groundfish in Amendment 16. At this session
attendees talked with a number of people from the US and internationally who
have worked with, or are working toward area management in many different
fisheries.
