Update on Whales
 

     This spring there will be new federal rules amending the current Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction Plan. Four of the six proposed alternatives will prohibit the future use of poly groundlines in 2008. DMR has been working with the Maine lobster industry, NOAA and the Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation to develop and test fishing gear modifications that will equally protect both the fishermen and large whales.  Attendees learned what's in store for fishermen with respect to whale regulations and potential gear modifications.  Results of ongoing collaborative research towards the development of low-profile groundlines and other risk reduction measures were presented.
