The American Lobster resource presents a mixed picture;
stable or increasing abundance for the Georges Bank stock and much of the
Gulf of Maine stock; and decreased abundance and recruitment, and continued
high fishing mortality for the Southern New England Stock. With the
completion of the 2005 ASMFC lobster stock assessment, lobster assessments
and management enter a new era. Recommendations have been made on stock
status, new reference points have been suggested, and innovative models are
waiting in the wings for the round. Attendees listened to a brief summary
of the assessment results and participated in a discussion of what this
means as we move forward.
