Jim Manning presented his annual update on the
"Environmental Monitors on Lobster Traps" project. Having now five years of
hourly bottom
temperature records from dozens of locations around the Gulf of Maine, we
can start to quantify just how cold (or warm in some times and places) it
has got in the past year and why. He also presented more SMCC student-made,
lobstermen-deployed, satellite-tracked drifter trajectories and discussed
their role in tracking the harmful algal bloom event in 2005.
These units have now collectively traveled over 50,000
kilometers of ocean and have taken some wild meanderings! Participants in
the eMOLT project were especially encouraged to attend.
