This Lobster Health Symposium brought together researchers
who have investigated the LIS die-off and shell disease outbreaks in
Southern New England and Canada. Attendees learned about the scientific
findings to date to get informed about the current state of knowledge with
regard to these events and help Maine proactively plan for our future.
The Lobster Health Symposium’s first series of
presentations provided some background on the LIS die-off and the evolution
of the research initiative, including a timeline of the die-off and how the
research effort came together. We then presented a summary of the
health of Maine’s lobster fishery and discussed the types of lobster health
issues Maine has faced over the years, such as weak lobster syndrome and
shell disease. We concluded this portion of the agenda with a presentation
on the state of the environment in Long Island Sound waters, and its role in
the LIS die-off. This presentation dealt specifically with the physical and
chemical conditions present in bottom waters and sediments in LIS, the
sensitivity of lobster to these conditions and how they interact with their
environment.
