Mussel Raft Culture Workshop
 

     This session was an opportunity for commercial fishermen to learn about mussel farming. Chip Davison and Mark Peterson of Great Eastern Mussel farms of Tenants Harbor gave a powerpoint presentation and lead a discussion about the money to be made by fishermen interested in growing mussels from rafts. Presenters explained the culture method, what Great Eastern is attempting to accomplish, and the steps that a fisherman must take to start an independent mussel business. A panel of fishermen currently engaged in mussel farming offered their advice. This session was also an opportunity for new and old members of the Mussel Working Group to discuss the groups goals for 2004 and to discuss ways to meet the expanding industry’s continuing need for seed.
