Why
do many Lobstermen have nasal congestion, tight lungs, and cough while
working in their winter workshop? Are they breathing in toxic substances
from dry rope, paint dust or fumes, burning rope or styrofoam? In 2001 Dr.
Rick Donahue, Vinalhaven’s Physician, with help from the Harvard School of
Environmental Health began measuring workshop air among volunteer Lobstermen
interested in helping answer these questions. The new findings showed
highly toxic air and are getting lobstermen to rethink their workshops this
winter. Attendees heard about the findings and what Lobstermen are doing to
protect their lungs.
