During
2004, the New England Fishery Management Council’s Atlantic Herring
Committee will be developing Amendment 1 to the Federal Fishery Management
Plan and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Atlantic Herring
Section will simultaneously develop Amendment 2 to the Interstate Fishery
Management Plan. Resource assessment data gathered in recent years, through
industry-supported hydroacoustic surveys and tagging activities, will be
integral to the scientific basis for new management measures that may be
imposed on the region’s herring fishermen and processors. This seminar
featured NEFMC and ASMFC fishery management plan staff, Maine and New
Brunswick researchers and a representative of a regional herring harvesters’
organization in a discussion of the basis for amending the region’s herring
plans. Time for audience participation was provided. Immediately following
this seminar, a drawing was held to award the $1000 lottery prize, offered
by sardine-processor Stinson/Connors to an individual who had returned a
tagged herring to Maine or New Brunswick researchers.
