Our History

The idea for a fishermen’s forum hatched in discussions between Bailey Island fisherman Bob Green and University of Maine economist Jim Wilson. The first Forum took place in 1976. It was funded by the University of Maine Sea Grant Program as part of a project which was being worked on by Jim Wilson, and Robin Alden, formerly managing editor of Commercial Fisheries News and Commissioner of the Maine Department of Marine Resources. The event was a success and Sea Grant continued to run it until 1982 when the industry took over the responsibility. The Maine Fishermen’s Forum was incorporated in 1984 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to perpetuating the annual Forum as an educational event for Maine fishing communities.

DID YOU KNOW… When originally scheduling the FORUM, the National Weather Service was contacted to verify the guaranteed WORST weekend of the year? We wanted to give you the best possible opportunity to attend without missing a fishing trip.
